The professional photojournalist or the travel photographer uses the skills and craft of photography to show the truth – in front of the lens. What is happening there, in that place, at that time. It may not be totally true and may only be a portion of the truth. But, it is the truth they want you to see.
Some of my work is merely good photography, pleasing and perhaps uplifting. But, if I am doing what the muses urge me to do, I cause the one to pause, to ponder, to delve within — to journey to places sometimes less than safe, to places that cause anxiety, doubts, or fears of one’s place in this universe.
Some would say I capture the soul of my images. I say, rather I try to capture images that tell a story that only the viewer knows are true, because they exist – within. That I try to capture the soul of him or her who pauses to look at my images.
If, by chance, my images evoke the questions “Could that have been me in that image?, Who am I?, Why is that person looking at me?, What are they telling me – about myself?” Then, my mark is good and my aim is sure. For, you see, this is what happens to me behind-the-lens.
This is my art.
To be sure, I don’t want to tell you what to think. Only what to think about.
